Easy! You mix it with your hardwood, and then all your woodloving species get an extra bit of nutrients as a little pep-up. It’s likely that adding a reasonable (anywhere from 5% to 15% by weight) amount of wheat bran helps out by giving the mycelium the supplemental elements (nitrogen etc) it needs to outpace any contaminants, which allows it to quickly convert the lignin in the wood into a usable food source and then take over the whole bag.
